Alina (1135-1167) was the tenth child and fifth daughter of Searle, Count of Valcria. She was promised to Rudolphus of Luperia at a young age, and much of her childhood revolved around being prepared for her life with him and her role as a future duchess. Her betrothed's apparent disinterest, however, was always a source of frustration for her in her younger years, and she found some refuge in his half-brother, Severin, with whom she fell in love.
On the eve of her wedding to Rudolphus in November of 1154, Alina eloped with Severin, prompting a tremendous scandal that shook Dovia to the point of producing a daughter kingdom. Rudolphus was promptly betrothed to Eudocia of Bandera, and at his bachelor party, Prince Roderick of Dovia drunkenly slandered against his father and brother, resulting in his banishment from the kingdom.
In March of 1155, after a few months of traveling through Dovia and the surrounding area, Alina and Severin took up lodgings in the castle at Veldorashire in Naroni, hoping to eventually gain lordship over the shire. This was acquired in September of 1155, a month before the birth of their eldest daughter Rahileine.
Following her baby's birth, Alina began to feel a consuming emptiness. At first, she figured it was only a temporary feeling, but when it did not go away, she began to worry. She decided that the only way to rid herself of the feeling was to get pregnant again, so her second baby was conceived in February of 1156, only four months after the first had been born.
Though the sensation disappeared as her pregnancy progressed, it returned shortly after her son Jadin's birth in November of 1156. This, coupled with seeing her pregnant sisters Cladelia and Renata at the wedding of her niece Lileina and Earl Cambrin of Sarona, prompted her desire to have a third child. The baby was conceived shortly after Alina caught Dalston and Geneva having sex.
Alina gave birth to a son, Searle, in September of 1157, and then a daughter, Viridis, in August of 1158. Lonriad was born in July of 1159, Riona in June of 1160, and Laveria in May of 1161. Each time, that ominous feeling of futility and purposelessness came with the birth.
Alina died in 1167 after suffering an ectopic pregnancy.
Though generally friendly and personable, Alina had some difficulty discussing her problems with other people--even her husband. As a result, she felt somewhat isolated. Meanwhile, she was an intelligent woman, and did not particularly care what other people thought of her.
Notable Quotes:
"Men. I speak with my mouth, and you promptly reply with your testicles."
--to Severin, from "In Which Alina Requests a Bedtime Story" (February 1156)
Medea (while largely and unhappily pregnant): Anyway, I shall retire now; it seems this parasite thrives on draining my energy.
Alina: Perhaps, Medea, he thinks that an extra bit of your energy will suffice in the place of your love.
--from "In Which Celina Keeps Smiling" (May 1156)
Laralita: So, Alina, I hear you had a son in November?
Alina: I did. His name is Jadin, for Viridis's father.
Laralita: Lovely. It's such a weight off your chest, isn't it? Now, you never have to bother sleeping with your husband again.
Alina: Are you kidding? I jumped Severin five minutes after the midwife cut the cord! It was the best sex we ever had.
--from "In Which Alina's Niece Is Given a Choice" (January 1157)
Severin (disheartened at the fact that Alina didn't send Lonriad away): Please, Alina, just let me decide--
Alina: Oh, you can decide all right. Are you sleeping in one of the guest bedrooms? Or on the couch? It's your decision.
--from "In Which Severin's Paradise Is Lost" (February 1158)
Laralita (distraught): Oh, it's horrible! Alina... I'm a twenty-two-year-old widow!
Alina: I'm sorry, sweetie, but you're twenty-five.
